Increasing Your TiVo Hard Drive Capacity

Often TiVo owners are faced with the fact that their TiVo recorder is inundated with programming and out of space. The question that naturally arises is what should be done about it. Either record less, or get rid of some of the recording or get a bigger hard drive. Many people are unaware there is a third option.

However most TiVO models can be redone with more hard drive space. Check out what can be done with your model. You could add an internal hard drive. Alternatively you could connect an extenal harddrive or swap in a larger drive. I think the simplest way to have more recording space in your TiVo is an external drive.

The My DVR Expander from Western Digital with a 500 gb external hard drive can give you 65 HD recording hours extra and a whopping 600 standard definition recording hours. These drives are also on sale in TiVo’s accessories area.

This Western Digital drive syncs with the Scientific Atlanta 8300 recorders in use by some cable companies as well. The Series 2 recorders of TiVo, however are incompatible with it. Many kits are available to add or upgrade your TiVo’s internal hard drives. Depending on the TiVo model and the drive, the instructions of upgrading differ.
